Flyers’ Hart out 2-3 weeks with abdominal strain

Philadelphia Flyers netminder Carter Hart will be sidelined for two-to-three weeks with a lower abdominal strain, the team announced Wednesday.

The Flyers recalled netminder Alex Lyon from the AHL's Lehigh Valley Phantoms on an emergency basis. In addition, forward Joel Farabee was loaned to the Phantoms and winger Chris Stewart was placed on waivers.

Hart, 21, suffered the injury during Tuesday's practice, according to Flyers reporter Sam Carchidi. He made 26 saves in a 6-5 victory over the Boston Bruins one night prior.

The sophomore puck-stopper owns a 15-11-3 record with a 2.61 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage through 29 starts this season.

Backup netminder Brian Elliott will likely carry most of the load in Hart's absence. The veteran has authored an 8.96 save percentage across 17 starts in 2019-20.

Philadelphia will play just five games over the next 16 days, in large part due to the All-Star break that begins Jan. 23.

Boudreau botches Wild’s lineup, leaves Pateryn as healthy scratch

The Minnesota Wild were left with just five active defensemen against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday after head coach Bruce Boudreau accidentally listed Greg Pateryn as a healthy scratch.

Pateryn, who was expecting to play, was forced to leave the Wild's bench by the officiating crew ahead of puck drop. The veteran blue-liner made his season debut Sunday after missing 44 games following core muscle surgery.

Minnesota forward Ryan Donato was unintentionally inserted into the lineup in Pateryn's stead, and the 23-year-old winger had to make his way from the press box to the ice to join his teammates, according to the Star Tribune Sport's Sarah McLellan.

The Wild entered Tuesday's action on a three-game losing streak and have dropped five of their last six.

Watch: Bruins lose shootout after Marchand overskates puck

Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand couldn't have escaped the ice faster following Monday's embarrassing 6-5 shootout loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.

With the game on the line, Marchand overskated the puck and grazed it slightly on his approach, resulting in a failed shootout attempt and a Flyers win.

Philadelphia's notorious mascot, Gritty, didn't waste any time giving the NHL's master troll a taste of his own medicine.

The Bruins' shootout record dropped to 0-7 this season following the loss, and the team has converted just four of 30 attempts.

The defeat also marked a rare collapse from Boston, which held a 5-2 advantage midway through the game. The Bruins were 199-1-5 dating back to 2010-11 when owning a three-goal lead, according to the Flyers' broadcast.

Report: Golden Knights looking to add defenseman

The Vegas Golden Knights are looking to add a defenseman before the trade deadline on Feb. 24, according to league sources of The Athletic's Jesse Granger.

Losers of three straight games, the Golden Knights have allowed at least four goals in four of their last five outings and have conceded 3.02 goals against per contest this season.

Vegas also gives up 10.69 high-danger scoring chances per game at five-on-five, the 18th-most in the league, and has seen its 19th-ranked penalty kill dwindle as the year has progressed.

Month PPGA PPOA PK%
Oct 5 51 90.1%
Nov 9 40 75.5%
Dec 11 51 78.4%
Jan 6 11 54.5%

However, the Golden Knights are pressed against the cap, with only $117,626 in projected space, and would need to move out a contract of equal amount to make a deal possible.

Vegas begins an eight-game road trip on Tuesday against the Buffalo Sabres.

Keefe: Maple Leafs’ lopsided loss vs. Panthers was ‘a good slap in the face’

Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe hopes his club's embarrassing loss to the Florida Panthers on Sunday serves as a wake-up call.

"You take it as what it is, which is a good slap in the face and a good reminder of how we can't play if we have any intention at all of being a successful team," Keefe said following the 8-4 defeat, according to TSN's Mark Masters.

The Panthers jumped on the Leafs for three goals in the opening period and chased goaltender Frederik Andersen just 49 seconds into the second frame after beating the Dane four times on 12 shots.

"We're leaving our goalie out to dry on multiple goals tonight," forward Mitch Marner said, according to Masters. "It's so unfair to them and we got to be way better."

Marner continued: "Right off the start there, off the bat, we're giving their best players walk-ins to the net and it's unacceptable."

With the loss, Toronto has dropped three straight games under Keefe for the first time, conceding a combined 18 goals over that span.

The Maple Leafs surrendered eight goals in a game for the first time since a 9-2 drubbing against the Nashville Predators in November 2014.

Watch: Huberdeau sets Panthers’ all-time points record

Jonathan Huberdeau is the Florida Panthers' new all-time scoring leader.

The 26-year-old winger recorded his 420th career point in an 8-4 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday to move past Olli Jokinen for the top spot in the franchise's history.

Huberdeau set up Mike Hoffman with a beautiful feed to reach the milestone.

The Panthers honored Huberdeau, who was selected by Florida third overall at the 2011 draft, with a video tribute during a TV timeout.

The assist brought Huberdeau's point total up to a team-leading 61 through 45 games in 2019-20. The Quebec native is also on pace to break the Panthers' single-season scoring record. That mark currently belongs to teammate Aleksander Barkov, who tallied 96 points last season.

Tkachuk: If Kassian ‘doesn’t want to get hit, stay off the tracks’

Matthew Tkachuk had some advice for Zack Kassian after the Edmonton Oilers winger responded to a hard hit from the Calgary Flames forward with a series of pummeling blows.

“If (Kassian) doesn’t want to get hit, then stay off the tracks," Tkachuk said according to Sportsnet's Eric Francis. "I caught him three times there – you think he’d learn after the first one. If he wants to react that way we’ll take the pp, we’ll take the game winner, and we’ll move on to first place”

Kassian received a double-minor for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct for retaliating to the hit. Flames forward Elias Lindholm buried the game-winning goal in the 4-3 victory on the subsequent power play.

When asked about Tkachuk's antics after the contest, Kassian didn't sugarcoat his feelings.

"If you're going to hit like that you have to answer the bell once in a while," Kassian told reporters including Daily Faceoff's Brady Trettenero. "He's just a young punk ... he's a p---- to be honest, straight up, that's the definition of it."

Kassian said he's challenged Tkachuk to fight in the past, but claims the Flames winger declined the invitation because of Kassian's status as a fourth liner.

"I've got 13 goals this year and he still won't fight me. When will he?" Kassian added.

The 28-year-old may get his chance sooner rather than later, as the rival clubs meet again on Jan. 29 in Edmonton.

Pavelski anticipates ‘awkward’ return to San Jose

Former San Jose Sharks captain Joe Pavelski is looking forward to his return to the Bay Area on Saturday, but understands there will be some discomfort in coming back to the place he spent the first 13 years of his NHL career.

"I think it'll be weird," Pavelski said, according to ESPN's Greg Wyshynski. "Probably seeing the jersey will be the hardest part. It'll be awkward in a lot of ways."

Pavelski, who signed a three-year, $21-million deal with the Dallas Stars in July, thought he'd be staying put in San Jose until it became clear the two sides couldn't agree to a deal.

"I always had a feeling that something would probably work out. Until it didn't, I didn't have any reason to think it wouldn't."

The Sharks have been a Stanley Cup contender through most of the decade, but have struggled immensely this season and recently fired head coach Pete DeBoer. When asked about the team's trying campaign, Pavelski admitted his disbelief.

"I am surprised they're struggling a little bit," Pavelski said. "I would have thought they'd be a little bit more successful this year. But that's just the way it goes. There are just teams like that."

Pavelski has played the fourth-most games in Sharks history (963) and ranks second in goals (355) and third in points (761). The veteran winger has tallied eight goals and 18 points through 44 games with the Stars this season.
