Leafs sign Aaron Dell to 1-year, $800K deal

The Toronto Maple Leafs have added an experienced third-string goaltender to their ranks.

The Leafs announced Tuesday they have signed free agent Aaron Dell to a one-year contract valued at $800,000.

The 31-year-old Dell has played all 107 games of his NHL career with the San Jose Sharks, logging a 48-34-12 record with a .908 save percentage and 2.76 goals-against average.

The addition of Dell comes a day after Toronto lost Kasimir Kaskisuo, who signed with the Nashville Predators.

Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan has tested positive for the coronavirus, the New York Knicks announced Saturday.

Dolan, 64, has been in self-isolation and is experiencing little to no symptoms, according to the team. He continues to oversee business operations.

Dolan is believed to be the first NBA owner to test positive for COVID-19. Fifteen individuals connected with the league - including multiple players and unidentified members of teams - have now been confirmed to have been infected as of Saturday.

Two of the first NBAers to test positive, Utah Jazz teammates Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell, were cleared of the illness on Friday.

New York City remains the epicenter for the pandemic in the United States, with nearly 30,000 cases as of Saturday. More than 500 have died in the city.

Ohio to ban mass gatherings including sporting events

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said Wednesday the state will issue an order banning mass gatherings, including sporting events.

"The reason we're doing the things we're doing is we have the potential of becoming Italy," DeWine said of the coronavirus precautions, according to The Washington Post's Adam Kilgore. Italy is among the countries hit hardest by the outbreak.

Such a ban directly affects NCAA Tournament games in both Dayton and Cleveland, as well as home games for the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers and the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Blue Jackets will close all games to the public beginning with Thursday's contest against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the team announced Wednesday. Admission will be limited to home and visiting club personnel, credentialed media and broadcast partners, essential club and arena staff, and NHL officials.

The NCAA announced later Wednesday that its entire men's and women's basketball tournaments will be played without fans present.

DeWine declared a state of emergency in Ohio on Monday. So far, four cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, have been reported in the state.

"This seems difficult for people," DeWine, a Republican, said. "But we know what's coming. We know what's around the corner. ... Everything looks the same, but it's really not."

Republican senator to introduce anti-sports betting bill after court ruling

Utah Senator Orrin Hatch said he will lead the charge on a new bill to keep sports gambling banned after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the federal law Monday.

"At stake here is the very integrity of sports," Hatch said in a statement cited by The Hill's Jordain Carney. "That's why I plan to introduce legislation in the coming weeks to help protect honesty and principle in the athletic arena."

Hatch was one of the legislative authors of the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) that kept sports betting effectively illegal outside of Nevada and Delaware. That was the law ruled unconstitutional Monday morning by the highest court in the country. The decision opens the door to legalized wagering nationwide.

Hatch, a conservative Republican, added: "we cannot allow this practice to proliferate amid uneven enforcement and a patchwork race to the regulatory bottom."

The 84-year-old Hatch plans to retire from politics at the end of this year.
