Capitals’ Reirden calls Wilson’s hit ‘incidental contact’

Washington Capitals head coach Todd Reirden didn't agree with the ejection of winger Tom Wilson on Friday night.

Wilson was assessed a match penalty for a hit to the head of New Jersey Devils forward Brett Seney late in the second period, but Reirden feels it was hardly worth even a minor penalty.

"I'm still trying to see how it's a penalty," Reirden said, according to Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post. "I think any other player, I don't know if -- it's maybe an interference call. Maybe."

Reirden continued to say the play was incidental in nature.

"I'm having a really tough time with this one," he said, according to The Athletic's Chris Kuc. "Because he isn't even intending to make a hit. It's incidental contact.

"This guy is doing everything he can to try to play the right way and this is how things are happening," the coach added. "It's a tough situation. We just had two players that have concussions they don't even call a penalty on."

Seney said postgame that he thought Wilson made contact with his shoulder.

"It was more kind of back of my shoulder," Seney said, according to Khurshudyan. "I don't know if he was intending to do it or what. I haven't had the chance to look at it yet."

Wilson was playing in just his ninth game since returning from a 14-game suspension for a hit on St. Louis Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist during the preseason.

Seney was able to return for the third period of Friday's contest after going through concussion protocol.

Capitals’ Wilson ejected for blindside hit on Devils’ Seney

Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson was assessed a match penalty and ejected for a check to the head of New Jersey Devils forward Brett Seney on Friday night.

The incident occurred late in the second period after Seney made a pass to cycle the puck behind the Capitals' net and was then hit with his back to Wilson.

Seney was helped to his feet by the Devils' training staff but was able to skate off the ice on his own and returned to the game for the start of the third period.

Friday's contest was Wilson's ninth game of the season since returning from a 14-game suspension for a hit to the head of St. Louis Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist during the preseason.

Wilson has been suspended four times in just over a year.

Report: Leafs still intend to sign Nylander, asking teams for trade specifics

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas is making sure he has all his ducks in a row leading up to Saturday's 5 p.m. ET deadline to sign restricted free agent William Nylander.

Dubas still plans to sign the 22-year-old, but the first-year GM is asking for trade specifics from teams interested in acquiring Nylander, according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun.

"The Leafs remain in wait-and-see mode when it comes to the player's response to the offer that they made since last week," LeBrun said on SportsCentre. "But in the meantime, they can't just sit there and make sure they put all their eggs in that basket. Our information is that, over the last 24 hours, the Leafs have reached out to some teams to say 'we know you're interested, well now we want to know what exactly you would specifically give up in a potential trade for William Nylander.'"

If Nylander does not agree to a contract with the Maple Leafs or a team that trades for him by the deadline, he will be forced to sit out for the remainder of the 2018-19 season.

Vezina Trophy Power Rankings: Rinne looking to repeat

In the second edition of theScore's Vezina Trophy Power Rankings, last year's winner is making a strong case to repeat, but other contenders remain in the mix with more than fourth months left to play. You can read October's edition here.

* Goalies must have played at least 10 games to be considered.
* Tampa Bay's Andrei Vasilevskiy isn't included due to his current injury.

Here are the top five candidates so far:

5. David Rittich, Calgary Flames

Rittich has backstopped the Flames to the top of the Pacific Division.

The 26-year-old has gone 8-2-1 in 11 starts and is sporting a .924 save percentage and a 2.21 goals-against average. He's drastically outplayed fellow netminder Mike Smith, who's gone 6-7-1 with a .883 save percentage and a 3.29 goals-against average.

Rittich also has a .948 save percentage at five-on-five and ranks third in the league with a .914 high-danger save percentage. He's made quite an impact despite starting fewer than 30 games so far in his young career.

4. John Gibson, Anaheim Ducks

Gibson could potentially be higher on this list if he was given just a little more slack from his teammates.

The 25-year-old has recorded a mediocre 9-8-4 record, but his 2.54 goals-against average, .927 save percentage, and underlying numbers show that he's been elite.

Gibson sits third in goals saved above average at even strength, first in high-danger shots against, seventh in high-danger save percentage, and fifth in save percentage.

The Ducks are giving up an average of 35.9 shots per game - the second most league-wide - and are firing just 26.4 at the opposition each night, the lowest mark in the league. Gibson is keeping the Ducks in the Pacific Division race.

3. Jaroslav Halak, Boston Bruins

It might come as a surprise, but Jaroslav Halak is having a monstrous 2018-19 campaign.

The veteran netminder has started the majority of the Bruins' games this season, going 8-3-2 with a 2.06 goals-against average and a .936 save percentage, marks that rank second in the league. He also leads all goalies with a .932 high-danger save percentage at five-on-five.

At some point, one would expect Tuukka Rask to reclaim the No. 1 spot in Boston, but in the meantime, it's Halak's to lose.

2. Frederik Andersen, Toronto Maple Leafs

On a team that boasts the likes of John Tavares, Mitch Marner, and potential Norris Trophy candidate Morgan Rielly, Frederik Andersen has arguably been the Maple Leafs' most valuable player.

The 29-year-old leads the league in wins with 14 and has posted a .932 save percentage and a 2.26 goals-against average, good for third and fourth in the league, respectively.

Andersen is off to his best start to a season since joining the Maple Leafs, keeping the team within striking distance of the Atlantic Division's top spot despite prolonged absences from Auston Matthews and William Nylander.

1. Pekka Rinne, Nashville Predators

If Pekka Rinne keeps this up, there's no question he'll take home his second straight Vezina Trophy.

The Predators netminder leads the league with a .938 overall save percentage and a 1.77 goals-against average. At five-on-five, he's tops among all goalies with an 11.98 goals saved above average and a .954 save percentage. In turn, Nashville sits just a point out of top spot in the NHL.

To summarize, it's going to take a lot to dethrone Rinne as the league's top goalie.

Winnipeg man takes home more than $1M thanks to Laine’s 5-goal game

Christopher Haley of Winnipeg just became Patrik Laine's biggest fan.

Haley entered the Sobeys/Safeway Million Dollar Score & Win contest and thanks to Laine, who recorded the first five-goal game in seven years in the Jets' 8-4 win over the St. Louis Blues, took home the grand prize of $1 million.

It didn't end there though, as Haley also took home $100,000 for Laine's fourth goal and $1,000 in gift cards for his hat trick goal.

As for Laine, the five-goal output helped him overtake the NHL goal-scoring lead with 19.

Predators place Turris on injured reserve

The Nashville Predators placed forward Kyle Turris on injured reserve Sunday.

In response to the injury, the club has recalled forward Rocco Grimaldi from the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League.

Turris suffered an undisclosed injury in Friday's 6-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues after he was hit into the boards by Brayden Schenn in the first period.

The designation means the 29-year-old will miss at least the next three games against the Anaheim Ducks, Colorado Avalanche, and Arizona Coyotes.

Turris has had a solid start to the 2018-19 campaign, posting five goals and 16 points in 23 games.

Oilers recall Puljujarvi after productive AHL stint

Jesse Puljujarvi will get his first taste of Ken Hitchcock on Sunday.

Sunday's contest will be Puljujarvi's first since the club dismissed former head coach Todd McLellan.

Puljujarvi got off to a slow start with the Oilers prior to his demotion, recording just one goal in 11 games.

Vancouver Canucks forward Antoine Roussel has been fined $5,000 for biting San Jose Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic, the NHL's Department of Player Safety announced on Saturday.

The incident occurred toward the conclusion of Friday's 4-0 Sharks win when Vlasic and Roussel engaged in some minor fisticuffs. After the game, Vlasic said Roussel bit him during the scuffle, according to The Athletic's Kevin Kurz, who added that the defenseman also showed him the mark on his hand.

The video shows Roussel biting as Vlasic grabs at him.
