Red Wings’ Helm out 6-8 weeks with shoulder injury

The Detroit Red Wings aren't expecting Darren Helm in the lineup until 2019.

The 31-year-old winger sustained a shoulder injury that will sideline him for six to eight weeks, general manager Ken Holland said, according to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.

Helm suffered the injury during Saturday's 3-2 overtime win over the New Jersey Devils. He left midway through the first period after logging just 2:03 of ice time.

The veteran forward has one goal and five assists in 20 games this season.

In other Red Wings injury news, forward Thomas Vanek and defenseman Jonathan Ericsson are both day to day with lower-body ailments but could return as early as Wednesday, head coach Jeff Blashill said, according to NHL.com's Dana Wakiji.

The Red Wings have been on a roll of late going 8-2-0 in their last 10 games.

Capitals’ Wilson: I’m not out trying to hurt guys

Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson doesn't want to be known as a dirty player.

Last week, a neutral arbitrator slashed Wilson's original 20-game ban for a headshot on St. Louis Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist by six games, allowing him to play immediately since he'd already sat out 16 contests. While he's been criticized for his style of play, Wilson maintains he never intends to injure opposing players.

"On that (Sundqvist) hit, I was actually doing a lot of what the department had asked me to do," he said, according to Chris Kuc of The Athletic. "I was low to the ice, I had my shoulder tucked and my feet planted. Unfortunately, the guy was in a tough position and the outcome isn't what the intent was. For me, the intent is never there as much as people try and say it is.

"I’m not out there trying to hurt guys; I'm trying to play the game hard. I have to make sure that I'm executing it completely clean. Even if there's the slightest little bit, you know and everyone else knows what will happen. It's tough. It's something I'm dealing with for sure."

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cullen ripped the league's suspension appeal process after Wilson's ban was reduced, arguing that simply suspending players for reckless hits won't persuade them to change how they play.

For now, Wilson is just hoping to help the Capitals "put together wins." He's posted one goal and three points in three games since he returned from his suspension.

Crosby making progress, won’t play vs. Sabres

Sidney Crosby will miss his third straight game when the Pittsburgh Penguins face the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night.

The 31-year-old is dealing with an upper-body injury. Crosby noted he is feeling better but won't suit up for a Penguins team that is winless since he exited the lineup.

"I'm not playing tonight, but things are going in the right direction," Crosby said, according to Michelle Crechiolo of NHL.com. "Happy with the way I'm feeling."

Crosby had been on a three-game point streak prior to his injury. The Penguins sit last in the Eastern Conference and have just two wins in their last 10 games.

Vasilevskiy out 4-6 weeks with fractured foot

Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy will miss four-to-six weeks with a fractured left foot, the team announced Friday.

The Lightning revealed on Thursday that the injury occurred during Wednesday's practice. Vasilevskiy was sent back to Tampa Bay to be re-evaluated by doctors with the team in the midst of a four-game road trip.

With Vasilevskiy out, backup goaltender Louis Domingue is expected to shoulder most of the workload between the pipes. The 26-year-old back-stopped the Lightning to a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night.

Vasilevskiy has been a rock this season, going 9-3-1 with a 2.30 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage.

Coyotes’ Archibald to have hearing for hit on Predators’ Hartman

Arizona Coyotes forward Josh Archibald will have a hearing Friday for his hit to the head of Nashville Predators forward Ryan Hartman, the NHL's Department of Player Safety announced.

The hit occurred late in the second period of Thursday night's contest. Archibald was assessed a two-minute minor for an illegal check to the head.

Hartman immediately went to the Predators' dressing room to be assessed following the hit. He returned for the third period but played just two shifts.

The 24-year-old has been a steady contributor for the Predators this season, posting five goals and nine points in 19 games. Archibald has gone pointless in nine contests.

Jets’ Morrissey to have hearing for Oshie takedown

Winnipeg Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey will have a hearing Thursday afternoon for interference and unsportsmanlike conduct following his Wednesday night hit on Washington Capitals forward T.J. Oshie, the NHL's Department of Player Safety announced.

Morrissey was not penalized on the play, which occurred with just over a minute left in regulation.

Capitals head coach Todd Reirden had no update on Oshie's condition following the game.

The play was reminiscent of the hit Florida Panthers defenseman Mike Matheson delivered to Vancouver Canucks rookie Elias Pettersson earlier this season. Matheson received a two-game suspension for his actions.

Washington and Winnipeg are both back in action Friday, with the Jets taking on the Buffalo Sabres and the Capitals in Denver to face the Colorado Avalanche.

Vasilevskiy sent back to Tampa to be re-evaluated for lower-body injury, out indefinitely

Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy has been sent back to Tampa Bay amid the club's current four-game road trip and is out indefinitely, head coach Jon Cooper told reporters Thursday, per the team. He'll be re-evaluated for a potential foot or ankle injury, according to The Athletic's Joe Smith.

Lightning backup goalie Louis Domingue said following Thursday's morning skate that Vasilevskiy broke his foot in practice Wednesday, according to Smith.

While Vasilevskiy looks like he'll be out long term, Cooper wouldn't give a timeline on his No. 1 goalie, noting that he'll wait until he receives the test results, Smith adds.

The Lightning currently pace the Atlantic Division with 25 points heading into Thursday's slate of games. Vasilevskiy has gone 9-3-1 with a 2.30 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage. Meanwhile, Domingue has been a bit shaky depiste a winning record thus far, holding a 3.43 goals-against average and a .887 save percentage.

In a corresponding move, the team recalled goalie Eddie Pasquale from the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League.

The Lightning are in action against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night, for which Domingue will likely get the start between the pipes.

Flyers’ Van Riemsdyk will play vs. Devils after 16-game absence

Philadelphia Flyers forward James van Riemsdyk will return to the lineup Thursday against the New Jersey Devils after missing 16 games with a knee injury, head coach Dave Hakstol confirmed to reporters.

Van Riemsdyk's been out since leaving the Flyers' second game of the season on Oct. 6 after blocking a shot from Colorado Avalanche defenseman Mark Barberio.

The 29-year-old Van Riemsdyk signed a five-year, $35-million contract with Philadelphia - the team that originally drafted him No. 2 overall in 2007 - in the offseason after a six-year stint with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

He's expected to play on the Flyers' third line alongside Jordan Weal and Wayne Simmonds. He'll also join the team's top power-play unit.

Crosby being evaluated for upper-body injury

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby wasn't at practice Wednesday as he's being evaluated for an upper-body injury, head coach Mike Sullivan told reporters.

The circumstances surrounding the injury weren't disclosed, and Crosby's status for Thursday's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning is unknown.

He played 21:32 in Tuesday's game against the New Jersey Devils, second among Penguins forwards behind Evgeni Malkin.

The 31-year-old superstar hasn't missed a regular-season game since the 2016-17 campaign.

Penguins sign Rutherford to 3-year extension

The Pittsburgh Penguins inked general manager Jim Rutherford to a three-year contract extension Wednesday that will keep him with the team through the 2021-22 season.

The 69-year-old is in his 25th year as an NHL general manager and his fifth with the Penguins.

During his tenure with Pittsburgh, he's helped build the team into a perennial contender, with four 100-plus-point seasons and back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017.

"We think Jim Rutherford is one of the best general managers in all of sports and, during his tenure in Pittsburgh, arguably the best GM in the NHL," Penguins co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle said in a statement. "His goal every year is to win the Stanley Cup and that kind of commitment to excellence is what drives us all."

Rutherford won his first Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006. Stan Bowman of the Chicago Blackhawks is the only other GM to win three championships in the salary-cap era. Rutherford ranks eighth all time among general managers in both wins (850) and games managed (1,834).
