Rangers’ Skjei scratched vs. Panthers

New York Rangers defenseman Brady Skjei won't be in the lineup for Saturday night's contest against the Florida Panthers.

It's the first time Skjei has been made a healthy scratch since December 2016. Head coach David Quinn believes the 24-year-old could benefit from watching the game from the press box.

"He looks indecisive, really in all areas," Quinn told NHL.com's Jon Lane. "I think he's fighting it a little bit mentally. I've said this before, it's good for a guy to take a deep breath and watch and collect himself. He understands where we're at. When he's back in we fully expect him to be the player we know he's capable of being."

In 19 appearances this season, Skjei has collected one goal and six assists, trailing only Neal Pionk in scoring among Rangers defensemen. Skjei also ranks second in average ice time, coming in at 21:52 per game.

Skjei picked up 25 points across 82 games in 2017-18.

Flyers’ Elliott exits with injury vs. Devils

More goaltending woes for the Philadelphia Flyers, as Brian Elliott left Thursday's contest against the New Jersey Devils with an undisclosed injury.

Elliott sustained the injury after Devils forward Kyle Palmieri scored a wraparound goal midway through the third period.

Calvin Pickard entered the game in place of Elliott, who was appearing in just his fourth game since missing time with an undisclosed injury.

Flyers backup Michal Neuvirth also remains sidelined with an undisclosed ailment, having played just one game this season.

Hoffman sets Panthers record with 14-game point streak

It's never a bad day when you're mentioned in the same breath as former NHL superstar Pavel Bure.

That's the case for Florida Panthers forward Mike Hoffman, who on Thursday pushed his point streak to 14 games when he picked up an assist against the Columbus Blue Jackets. It moved him one past Bure's 13-game record set during the 1999-00 season.

Hoffman has registered seven goals and nine assists over the stretch.

The Panthers acquired Hoffman from the San Jose Sharks this offseason in exchange for three draft picks.

A timetable for his return will be announced following the procedure.

Fowler suffered the injury Monday against the Nashville Predators when he was hit in the face with a puck.

He's picked up three goals and seven assists in 19 games this season.

Coyotes sign Chychrun to 6-year extension

The Arizona Coyotes have agreed to a six-year contract extension with defenseman Jakob Chychrun, the team announced Tuesday.

The deal reportedly carries an average annual value of $4.6 million, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

"Jakob is a young, highly skilled defenseman with an incredibly bright future," Coyotes general manager John Chayka said in a statement. "He has battled through some adversity with injuries the last two years, but we remain confident that he has the necessary size, talent and work ethic to be one of our core players for many years to come."

Chychrun is set to make his season debut Tuesday after missing the first 16 games of the year while recovering from offseason knee surgery.

The 20-year-old is in the final year of his entry-level contract. In 50 games with Arizona last season, the blue-liner picked up four goals and 10 assists.

Arizona selected Chychrun with the 16th pick in the 2016 draft.

Carey Price on struggles: ‘It’s all upstairs’

The Montreal Canadiens expect a lot from Carey Price, who makes $10.5 million annually. The struggling goaltender is demanding more from himself, too.

"Lets just cut to the chase, I just didn't play very good tonight," Price told reporters after allowing six goals on only 31 shots during his team's 6-5 loss Thursday to the Buffalo Sabres.

Despite plenty of scoring, the Canadiens weren't able to walk away with two points on Thursday, losing a crucial game in the surprisingly competitive Atlantic Division.

"I'm just not playing as well as I did earlier," Price added. "It's all upstairs, I gotta figure it out."

A breakdown of Price's performance this season shows that Thursday's poor outing wasn't a one-off result for the veteran:

Save percentage Games
Below .845 2
.846 - .890 5
.891 - .919 2
Above .920 3

Price's last two appearances have been his worst of the season, as he's turned aside just 52 of 63 shots.

He won't have much time to dwell on Thursday's loss. The Canadiens return to the ice on Saturday to take on the Vegas Golden Knights.

Stars’ Klingberg out at least 3 weeks with upper-body injury

The Dallas Stars will be without defenseman John Klingberg for at least the next three weeks after he suffered an upper-body injury, according to NHL.com's Mark Stepneski.

Klingberg was on the ice for nearly 21 minutes against the San Jose Sharks on Thursday, but he seemingly played through the ailment.

It's a major loss for the Stars because of Klingberg's ability to generate offense from the back end. In 16 appearances this season, Klingberg has registered five goals and eight assists. He finished second among defensemen in scoring last season with 67 points, one shy of Washington's John Carlson.
