D.C. bar offered shots for pennies for every Capitals goal in Game 1

D.C.'s Union Pub came up with a surefire way to get Washington Capitals fans through the door for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final.

For every goal scored by the Capitals on Monday night, the bar offered shots of alcohol for pennies based on the player's jersey number. For example, when Brett Connolly's deflection tied the game at 1-1 in the first period, shots were only 10 cents each.

The bar sold a total of 157 shots by the end of the night, according to David Fucillo of SB Nation. There's no word yet on whether they plan to run the special again for Game 2.

‘The Simpsons’ predicted Stanley Cup would be in Las Vegas

The list of accurate real-world predictions made by "The Simpsons" will get even longer if the Vegas Golden Knights win the Stanley Cup.

As NHL.com's Nick Cotsonika pointed out, the animated sitcom had the Stanley Cup in Las Vegas with Homer Simpson and Ned Flanders long before the Golden Knights existed.

The picture is from "Viva Ned Flanders," the 10th episode of Season 10, in which Homer takes Ned on a trip to Las Vegas. While there, they become intoxicated and end up marrying two cocktail waitresses.

Golden Knights defenseman Luca Sbisa offered this explanation: "Apparently, Matt Groening knows a guy or is a guy who has time travel. I saw this video (online), and there's proof after proof that somebody (time-traveled)."

"I don't want to read too much into it," he added. "But I like where their head is at."

Mayor wants to rename Virginia town ‘Capitalsville’ in honor of Capitals

A town in Virginia is hoping to temporarily change its name to celebrate the Washington Capitals advancing to the Stanley Cup final for the first time in 20 years.

Lovettsville mayor Bob Zoldos announced earlier this month he would seek town council's approval to rename the town "Capitalsville" if Washington secured a Stanley Cup berth, according to Patrick Szabo of Loudoun Now. If approved, the new name will remain in effect throughout the Capitals' series against the Vegas Golden Knights and for at least a week afterward if they win the trophy.

The Capitals like the idea, too. Zoldos said team officials are "very excited" about it and that the franchise will have final say in the name. He also wants to host a viewing party with Capitals staff and a small parade if the team wins the Cup.

"That would be just unbelievable," Zoldos said.
