Last Humboldt player injured in bus crash released from hospital

Nearly a year after a bus crash that left 16 people dead and 13 others injured, the last Humboldt Broncos player has been released from the hospital.

Morgan Gobeil's family announced on Monday in a statement that, following a 333-day hospital stay, he'll begin the next stage of his recovery as an outpatient with a therapy team at Saskatoon City Hospital.

Gobeil suffered a traumatic brain injury, multiple fractures to his skull, three facial fractures, broken ribs, and lacerations to his liver and spleen, according to The Canadian Press.

"During his time at the hospital, Morgan has celebrated his high school graduation, his brother's wedding, his 19th birthday, several holidays, and he has witnessed the change of all four seasons," the statement reads. "While Morgan has not regained his speech or his ability to walk yet, we remain hopeful that those will be the kind of milestones we will someday be able to celebrate."

Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, the transport truck driver involved in the crash, pleaded guilty to all charges against him in January.

Granlund found out about Predators trade while fiancee was in labor

Monday was a whirlwind day for Mikael Granlund.

The former Minnesota Wild forward was with his fiancee, who was about to give birth to their first child, when he got the call that he had been traded to the Nashville Predators.

"I did talk to him as a father and now a grandfather," Predators general manager David Poile said, according to Paul Skrbina of the Tennessean. "I didn't even say anything to him about the trade for five minutes. I told him how important it was for him to take care of his wife and the baby and what a great day this is for he and his family.

"We'll have more of a hockey conversation with him after the baby born."

Wild general manager Paul Fenton told reporters he felt bad about the timing of the trade.

The 26-year-old Granlund has 49 points in 63 games this season.

Penguins fan undergoes kidney transplant after sign goes viral

Kelly Sowatsky, the Pittsburgh Penguins fan whose public plea for a kidney went viral earlier this year, found a match.

In March, the Penguins tweeted a photo of the 31-year-old holding a sign that read, "Calling All Hockey Fans! I Need A Kidney! Kidney! Kidney! Gratefully Yours, Kelly."

Jeff Lynd, a Penguins fan living in Delaware, saw the tweet and reached out to Sowatsky offering to donate his kidney.

"I knew my blood type matched and I had this feeling it was just something that I had to do," Lynd told Good Morning America.

Eight months later, on Nov. 6, Sowatsky and Lynd underwent kidney transplant surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, according to Sam Kasan of the Penguins' official website.

Sowatsky and Lynd are both recovering well.

"There's no words to really express the gratitude and the way I feel about what (Lynd) did for me because he literally saved my life," Sowatsky said. "And the doctors, too. If you trickle it down, the Pittsburgh Penguins are the reason my life is being saved, too. If it weren't for (Penguins director of new media Andi Perelman) and for me loving the Penguins ... "

Capitals fan treks to Antartica to remind penguins who won Cup

A Washington Capitals fan traveled to the Antarctic Peninsula just to troll the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Sampson Coe shared a photo Wednesday on Facebook of himself wearing a Stanley Cup champions shirt with a waddle of penguins behind him.

Coe, 29, told Scott Allen of the Washington Post that he and his wife, Lorelei, are in the midst of a one-year sabbatical that will take them to every continent.

"Been planning something along those lines since we booked the trip last year, well before the boys lifted Lord Stanley," Coe said.

"(We) had to pack light given the amount of ground we're covering (one backpack each), so I only have a few T-shirts in the rotation. I made damn sure that the Caps and Nats were represented."

ECHL team unveils 1st-ever 3-D hockey jersey

The Reading Royals, the Philadelphia Flyers' ECHL affiliate, will don special 3-D jerseys for their Veteran's Day Game on Nov. 17.

Jeff Tasca, who designed the jerseys, told Sean Leahy of Pro Hockey Talk that the Royals and Athletic Knit spent the past six months working on the project.

"When initially making the design you want to have it with different 'layers' in it that appear 3-D, so you first keep that in mind," Tasca said. "Then you have to go through applying the 3-D effect to each layer in the artwork."

Fans in attendance for the game will receive 3-D glasses. The Royals also plan to auction off the jerseys afterward through their app.
