Fleury, Grubauer, Vasilevskiy named Vezina Trophy finalists

Marc-Andre Fleury, Philipp Grubauer, and Andrei Vasilevskiy were named the three finalists for the Vezina Trophy, the NHL announced Tuesday.

General managers vote on the award, which is handed out annually to the league's top goaltender.

Fleury finished his season for the Vegas Golden Knights with a .928 save percentage and 1.98 goals against average, and he combined with teammate Robin Lehner to win the William M. Jennings Trophy, which is awarded to the goaltenders who allow the fewest goals during the regular season. The 36-year-old ended the campaign ranked third in wins (26) and shutouts (six) in 36 games, and this is his first time being nominated for the Vezina.

Grubauer helped lead the Colorado Avalanche to their third Presidents' Trophy in franchise history with his superb play this campaign, finishing the regular season ranked second in wins (30), first in shutouts (seven), and second in goals-against average (1.95) alongside a solid .922 save percentage. This is also the first Vezina nomination for the 29-year-old.

A finalist for the fourth straight year, Vasilevskiy turned in yet another outstanding season with the Tampa Bay Lightning. The 26-year-old led the NHL in wins (31) for the fourth straight season, which hasn't been done since Martin Brodeur did it from 2002-03 through 2006-07. Vasilevskiy finished the season with a dazzling .925 save percentage and 2.21 goals-against average.

DeBoer defends Reaves: ‘One of the cleanest tough guys I’ve seen’

Vegas Golden Knights head coach Pete DeBoer has come to the defense of Ryan Reaves.

"It's not hard to defend Ryan Reaves," DeBoer said Monday, according to David Schoen of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "For me, Ryan Reaves is one of the cleanest tough guys I've seen in the league in my 12, 13 years."

The Golden Knights forward was assessed a match penalty for attempting to injure Colorado Avalanche defenseman Ryan Graves during a scrum after a whistle in Game 1 of their teams' second-round series Sunday night.

Reaves will have a hearing Monday for roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced.

But DeBoer believes extra discipline may not be necessary.

"As far as the incident, I don't know. That's in player safety. I do know a couple things: His gloves never came off, and nobody was hurt on the play," DeBoer said. "Whether they're going to look at what's between the lines there and think that there's something that maybe I don't see, that's their department, not mine."

Graves was bleeding and briefly lay prone on the ice after the play.

Reaves ranks eighth among all players with 937 penalty minutes since entering the NHL in 2010. The 34-year-old has been suspended twice before, earning bans in 2016 and during last year's postseason.

Bettman upholds Kadri’s 8-game suspension

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman upheld Colorado Avalanche forward Nazem Kadri's eight-game suspension, the league announced Monday.

Kadri will now appeal the suspension to a neutral arbitrator who will have the final say, according to The Athletic's Peter Baugh.

The 30-year-old was handed the ban after delivering a hit to the head on St. Louis Blues defenseman Justin Faulk during Game 2 of Round 1. Kadri has already served three games of the suspension, which means he will be eligible to return no earlier than Game 7 of Colorado's series against the Vegas Golden Knights.

This marks the third time Kadri has been suspended in the postseason and the sixth time overall during his career.

Maple Leafs’ Muzzin expected to miss at least 3 weeks

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Jake Muzzin is expected to miss a minimum of three weeks due to a lower-body injury suffered during Game 6, head coach Sheldon Keefe announced Monday, according to Sportsnet's Eric Engels.

Muzzin left Saturday's contest in the second period after appearing to pull something.

Prior to the injury, the 32-year-old led the team's defensemen in ice time this postseason. He contributed two goals and one assist through six games while also adding 16 hits and 11 blocked shots.

Keefe confirmed Rasmus Sandin will replace Muzzin, and that's the club's only lineup change after Game 6, according to TSN's Mark Masters.

Maple Leafs to host 550 health care workers for Game 7 vs. Canadiens

The Toronto Maple Leafs will host 550 fully vaccinated frontline health care workers at Scotiabank Arena for their Game 7 matchup against the Montreal Canadiens on Monday night.

"Every single day our healthcare workers put their lives on the line to help others," Ontario Premier Doug Ford's statement reads. "This small token of appreciation doesn't measure up to the sacrifices they've made during COVID-19, but it is an opportunity for us to recognize their heroic efforts to keep each and every one of us safe."

MLSE, the company that owns the Maple Leafs, will cover the costs for the workers to attend and give each attendee a jersey.

On Sunday the province rejected a proposal to allow spectators into Scotiabank Arena for Game 7, according to TSN.

Fans were welcomed back to the Bell Centre in Montreal for Game 6 on Saturday, the first time a Canadian NHL team has permitted spectators at home since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The club won 3-2 in overtime with 2,500 fans in attendance.

Talbot: I’d ‘be getting fined’ if Golden Knights’ equalizer stood

Minnesota Wild goaltender Cam Talbot is happy with the officials' decision to overturn a goal against him in the third period of a 3-0 win over the Vegas Golden Knights.

"If that one stood, I probably wouldn't be here right now," Talbot said postgame, according to The Athletic's Michael Russo. "I probably would just be getting fined."

With the Wild up 1-0, Vegas appeared to get the equalizer past Talbot with around half of the third period still to play. The goal was quickly waved off due to goaltender interference, with Alex Tuch standing in the crease.

The Golden Knights challenged the ruling and lost, and were handed a two-minute delay of game penalty as a result. Kevin Fiala scored on the ensuing power play to put Minnesota up 2-0 before Nick Bjugstad potted Minnesota's third marker to seal the contest.

Head coach Dean Evason noted that his team was on the other end of similar calls earlier in the series.

"What comes around goes around," Evason said.

He added: "You want consistency, and they gave it to us."

Minnesota entered Game 6 trailing 3-2 in the series. Game 7 is set for 9 p.m. ET on Friday night.

McDavid committed to Oilers despite sweep: ‘We want to see this thing through’

Connor McDavid isn't going anywhere.

The Edmonton Oilers captain reiterated his commitment to the franchise after the Winnipeg Jets swept the club in the first round of the playoffs.

"That's not the case at all. We have a great core," McDavid said of the outside chatter of him potentially leaving Edmonton, according to The Athletic's Daniel Nugent-Bowman. "We want to see this thing through together."

McDavid put together one of the most dominant regular-season performances of all time this year, recording 33 goals and 105 points in 56 contests. He amassed one goal and three assists in the four postseason games.

The phenom inked an eight-year, $100-million contract with the Oilers in 2017 and is signed until 2026.

Teammate Leon Draisaitl, who finished second in scoring in the NHL this season with 84 points in 56 games and notched five points in the postseason, echoed a similar sentiment.

"No one in our dressing room is thinking about stopping," Draisaitl said. "We know we're on the right track."

The Oilers placed second in the North Division with a 35-19-2 record. Edmonton also finished second in its division last season but failed to make it past the qualifying round in the league's return to play.

Since McDavid joined the Oilers in 2015, the club has missed the playoffs entirely three times and made it to the second round just once. The 24-year-old leads the league with 574 points in 407 games since his NHL debut - 43 ahead of Patrick Kane in second.

Jets complete stunning sweep with dramatic win in triple overtime

The Winnipeg Jets defeated the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 in triple overtime of Game 4 on Monday night to complete the sweep and advance to Round 2.

Kyle Connor was the hero for the Jets, beating Mike Smith with a sharp wrist shot shortly after the Oilers had killed a penalty in the third extra frame. The win was the Jets' third straight in overtime and represents the team's first playoff series victory since 2018.

Mark Scheifele got his first goal of the series to open up the scoring in the first frame before Connor McDavid quickly answered with a slick wraparound finish for the Oilers. Mason Appleton would ensure the Jets took a lead to the locker room with a go-ahead marker with just over four minutes left in the opening stanza.

The second period was a different story, as both Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Alex Chiasson would find the net to give the Oilers the 3-2 lead. Edmonton clearly showed a renewed sense of urgency, outshooting the Jets 12-5 in the frame and creating numerous chances on net. If not for the heroics of Connor Hellebuyck, the scoreline could have been significantly worse for Winnipeg after 40 minutes. The veteran goalie was once again a star for the home team, stopping 37 of 40 shots in the contest.

Scheifele once again made his presence felt in the third, wiring home a wicked one-timer at the 6:06 mark to even the contest. The Jets had some quality chances down the stretch to win it, but Smith was solid in the visiting net, eventually finishing with 39 saves on 43 shots.

After two back-and-forth overtime periods yielded a number of chances, Connor took advantage of a poor Oilers' line change to find some space and beat Smith for the winner in the third extra session.

Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse finished the game with 62:07 minutes of ice time -- the third-highest total in the playoffs since the stat started being tracked in 1998.

Winnipeg will now play the eventual winner of the other North Division series between Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs.
