Penguins trade Reilly Smith to Rangers for picks

The Pittsburgh Penguins traded forward Reilly Smith to the New York Rangers for a second-round pick in 2027 and a conditional fifth-rounder in 2025, the teams announced.

Pittsburgh will receive the lower of New York's two fifth-round selections. The Rangers landed an additional pick by trading Ryan Reaves to the Minnesota Wild in 2022.

The Penguins are retaining 25% of Smith's salary in the deal, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. Smith will count for $3.75 million against New York's cap before becoming an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Smith landed in Pittsburgh last summer via trade from the Vegas Golden Knights. He's now been dealt five times since 2013.

The 33-year-old produced 40 points in 76 games last season while averaging 16 minutes per night. Smith has five 20-goal seasons under his belt and won the Stanley Cup with Vegas in 2023.

The Rangers still have approximately $8 million in cap space to work with after the trade, according to CapFriendly.

Islanders get Duclair on 4-year pact

The New York Islanders signed forward Anthony Duclair to a four-year contract, the club announced Monday.

It's worth $3.5 million per season, reports Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

Duclair excelled down the stretch for the Tampa Bay Lightning this past season, racking up eight goals and seven assists over 17 games in the regular season before adding two helpers in five playoff contests.

The Bolts acquired him from the San Jose Sharks on March 7. Duclair, who'll turn 29 on August 26, posted 16 tallies and 11 helpers over 56 games with the Sharks in 2023-24.

Duclair is notoriously streaky, but he set career highs with 31 goals and 27 assists over 71 contests with the Florida Panthers in 2021-22.

He's played for eight previous teams in his 10-year career.

Stars nab Dumba on 2-year pact

The Dallas Stars signed defenseman Matt Dumba to a two-year contract with an average annual value of $3.75 million.

The Stars needed bodies on defense after buying out Ryan Suter and losing Chris Tanev in free agency. Dallas also signed blue-liner Brendan Smith to a one-year, $1-million contract on Monday.

Dumba split last season between the Arizona Coyotes and Tampa Bay Lightning. He put up 12 points in 76 games with the two clubs and averaged nearly 20 minutes per contest.

The soon-to-be 30-year-old played the first 10 seasons of his career with the Minnesota Wild, who drafted him seventh overall in 2012.

Blackhawks add quartet of veterans, including Brossoit, Maroon

The Chicago Blackhawks bolstered their two significant signings from earlier in the day by adding four more experienced players as depth.

The Blackhawks signed backup goaltender Laurent Brossoit to a two-year contract at $3.3 million per season, the club announced Monday. Chicago inked forward Craig Smith to a one-year, $1-million pact.

The club also brought in defenseman Alec Martinez on a one-year, $4-million agreement and inked forward Pat Maroon to a one-year, $1.3-million deal.

Brossoit was one of the best No. 2 netminders in the NHL this past season. The 31-year-old went 15-5-2 with a .927 save percentage over 22 games with the Winnipeg Jets in 2023-24, his 10th campaign.

Smith collected 11 goals and nine assists over 75 games with the Dallas Stars this past season, his 13th in the NHL.

Maroon chipped in four goals and 12 assists in 51 games, 49 of which he played with the Minnesota Wild. They traded the 36-year-old to the Boston Bruins. He played two regular-season contests with the Bruins and 13 more in the playoffs. Maroon won the Stanley Cup three years in a row, doing so with the St. Louis Blues in 2019 and then with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021.

Martinez played four full seasons and 10 games of another with the Vegas Golden Knights after spending parts of his first 10 campaigns with the Los Angeles Kings. He helped the Kings win the Cup in 2012 and 2014 and then did the same with the Golden Knights in 2023.
