Canucks acquire Ekman-Larsson in blockbuster trade involving Eriksson

The Vancouver Canucks acquired defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson and forward Conor Garland from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for forwards Loui Eriksson, Jay Beagle, and Antoine Roussel, as well as the ninth overall pick in Friday's draft, a second-round pick in 2022, and a seventh-rounder in 2023, the teams announced Friday.

Arizona also retained 12% of Ekman-Larsson's contract, according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun.

Ekman-Larsson, 30, has six years remaining on his contract, which carries an average annual value of $8.25 million. The Coyotes captain managed three goals and 21 assists in 46 games last season. He has 388 points in 769 career contests.

Garland, 25, is an impending restricted free agent. He's coming off a career season, scoring 12 goals and adding 27 assists in 49 games.

The Canucks' trio of forwards have massively underwhelmed since signing lucrative deals. Eriksson is in the final season of a six-year, $36-million pact he signed in 2016. Roussel and Beagle each have one year remaining on their contracts with a $3-million cap hit.

Vancouver sheds some salary with the deal but still has to sign stars Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes to new contracts.

Arizona has been stockpiling assets by taking on contracts from other teams, also acquiring Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere and New York Islanders forward Andrew Ladd. The club now has three second-round picks in this year's draft and five second-rounders in 2022.

The Edmonton Oilers selected forward Xavier Bourgault with the 22nd overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.

Bourgault's third QMJHL season was a shortened one due to the pandemic, but he still managed to impress. His 1.38 point-per-game rate in 2020-21 followed a strong 2019-20 campaign in which he racked up 33 goals and 38 assists over 63 contests.

The Quebec native's October 2002 birthday allowed him to play three junior campaigns before being drafted, and he collected a combined 131 points over 154 regular-season games in that span.

Bourgault was projected by most experts as a mid-to-late first-round pick.

NHL Central Scouting slotted him in 13th among North American skaters on its final rankings.

What they're saying

"Bourgault stands out with the puck on his stick," wrote The Athletic's Corey Pronman. "He's confident, attempting to make difficult dekes and passes and executing at a solid frequency."

"I wouldn't describe Bourgault as a physical player or the first guy over the boards on the penalty kill, but he backchecks well enough and creates turnovers with his hustle," Pronman added. "In a sentence, Bourgault projects as a middle-six NHL forward, likely on the wing."

"(Bourgault is) an excellent finisher who works best in the offensive zone," Sportsnet's Sam Cosentino wrote. "(He's) an underrated playmaker, too."

"(His) game doesn't leap off the ice at you but he's dangerous in a variety of ways, with a deceptive release that comes off of his blade early in his shooting motion and (a) stance to surprise goalies ... and good playmaking instincts inside the offensive zone," wrote The Athletic's Scott Wheeler, who viewed Bourgault as a future middle-six forward.

Red Wings trade up to grab Sebastian Cossa 15th overall

The Detroit Red Wings drafted towering goaltender Sebastian Cossa with the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.

Detroit moved up to select the goalie, trading the 23rd overall pick as well as the 48th and 138th selections to the Dallas Stars.

Cossa was Central Scouting's top-ranked North American goalie, and for good reason. The 18-year-old has posted dominant numbers in the WHL the past two seasons, and his blend of size and technical skill make him a can't-miss prospect - even though drafting netminders in the first round has become less frequent in recent years.

The young backstop's likely a few years away from making an impact in the pros, but with the right development, Cossa could be the next big thing - literally - in the NHL's goaltending landscape.

What they're saying

"His athletic toolkit is very intriguing as a 6-foot-6 goalie who can move very well for that size," said The Athletic's Corey Pronman in his final prospect rankings.

"He covers a lot of net with his length. He has some quick twitch in his frame in how he moves around the net and gets in and out of his butterfly. Cossa’s reads are typically great. He loses track of some pucks and can be a bit busy in the net but usually anticipates the play very well. I love his selective aggressiveness with his positioning, and how he takes away angles with his size as well as how well he uses his stick to break up a lot of plays."

Blackhawks acquire Seth Jones, reportedly agree to 8-year, $76M extension

The Chicago Blackhawks have acquired Seth Jones from the Columbus Blue Jackets in a blockbuster deal, the team announced Friday.

The Blackhawks intend to sign Jones to an eight-year extension carrying a $9.5-million annual cap hit, according to TSN's Darren Dreger.

Here are the full terms of the deal:

Chicago receives Columbus receives
D Seth Jones D Adam Boqvist
No. 32 pick No. 12 pick
2022 6th-rounder No. 44 pick
2022 1st-rounder

The Blue Jackets reportedly flipped pick No. 44 to the Carolina Hurricanes for defenseman Jake Bean shortly after the trade.

Jones received down-ballot Norris Trophy votes for four straight seasons from 2017-20. He finished as high as fourth in 2018 when he tallied 16 goals and 41 assists in 78 games. He registered 28 points in 56 contests this past season but posted miserable underlying numbers.

The 26-year-old has one season left on a contract carrying a $5.4-million annual cap hit. The reported extension would make Jones the NHL's third-highest-paid blue-liner when it kicks in, trailing Erik Karlsson of the San Jose Sharks and Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings.

Bruins bring back Hall on 4-year deal with $6M AAV

The Boston Bruins have re-signed pending unrestricted free-agent forward Taylor Hall to a four-year contract carrying an annual cap hit of $6 million, the team announced Friday.

The pact includes no-trade coverage, reports TSN's Darren Dreger.

Boston acquired Hall from the Buffalo Sabres for a second-round pick and forward Anders Bjork before last year's trade deadline. Hall was an excellent fit on the Bruins' second line, and he immediately upped his production upon arrival with 14 points in 16 regular-season games.

Hall's new contract will make him the fourth-highest paid forward on Boston's team-friendly payroll. The winger trails captain Patrice Bergeron ($6.875 million), David Pastrnak ($6.66 million), and Brad Marchand ($6.125 million).

The Bruins have roughly $20 million in cap space after re-signing Hall, according to CapFriendly. Veteran David Krejci and goaltender Tuukka Rask are among the key players on Boston's books headed to free agency.

Report: Hyman expected to sign with Oilers

Zach Hyman is expected to leave the Toronto Maple Leafs as an unrestricted free agent and sign with the Edmonton Oilers, reports The Athletic's James Mirtle.

Hyman's new deal is either seven or eight years in length and will pay him $5 million to $5.5 million per season, Mirtle adds.

The Maple Leafs and Oilers can still conduct a sign-and-trade, which would allow Edmonton to add an eighth year to his contract. Toronto granted Hyman permission to negotiate with other teams earlier this offseason in an effort to get back an asset for trading his rights.

The Florida Panthers drafted Hyman in 2010, but he's played all his NHL games with the Leafs dating back to 2015. He's been a staple in Toronto's top six in recent years and had a career-best 0.77 points per game in 2021.

The 29-year-old has spent the majority of his ice time in recent seasons alongside Auston Matthews or John Tavares and should remain an effective producer on the wing of Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl in Edmonton.

Sabres trade Ristolainen to Flyers for package including Hagg, 1st-rounder

The Buffalo Sabres have dealt defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen to the Philadelphia Flyers for blue-liner Robert Hagg, the 14th overall pick in the 2021 draft, and a second-rounder in 2023.

Ristolainen played eight seasons with the Sabres, who drafted him eighth overall in 2013. The Finnish rearguard, who'll turn 27 in October, averaged 23:53 of ice time during his Buffalo career, though he fell below that mark in each of his last two campaigns.

Ristolainen's average time on ice increased from 20:37 in his first full season (2014-15) to 25:17 in the following campaign. He then played over 26 minutes per game in each of the next two seasons before seeing that diminish in each of the last three.

Ristolainen is signed through 2021-22 at a cap hit of $5.4 million, according to CapFriendly. Hagg is also on the books through next season but his cap hit is only $1.6 million.

Buffalo's new first-rounder will be the 13th name called Friday night, as the Arizona Coyotes forfeited the 11th selection for violating the NHL's combine testing policy. The Sabres also hold the No. 1 pick.
