Avalanche draft Taylor Makar, brother of Cale, with 220th pick

The Colorado Avalanche drafted forward Taylor Makar with the 220th pick of the 2021 NHL Draft. He's the younger brother of Avalanche star defenseman Cale Makar.

Taylor, 20, played with the AJHL's Brooks Bandits last season, notching five goals and 14 assists in 16 games. Cale played for the same team before turning pro.

Cale - who inked a six-year, $54-million extension with the Avalanche earlier Saturday - previously expressed hope that his brother would be drafted this year.

"He's just a very hard-working kid," the older Makar said, according to The Athletic's Peter Baugh. "I compare him to a Josh Anderson but with the pestiness of one of the Tkachuk brothers."

Taylor and Cale are the third set of brothers to be reunited with the same team during the 2021 NHL Draft. Luke Hughes joined his brother Jack with the New Jersey Devils after being selected No. 4, while Colton Dach joined his brother Kirby with the Chicago Blackhawks after being selected 62nd.

Islanders select 3rd-ranked European skater Aatu Raty with 52nd pick

The New York Islanders drafted forward Aatu Raty with the 52nd overall selection in the 2021 NHL Draft.

Raty was once considered to be among the top prospects available in 2021, but a down year hurt his stock. Nevertheless, he was still ranked third among all European skaters by NHL Central Scouting entering the draft.

He posted dominant numbers as he rose through the ranks of the Finnish junior system, but his offensive production has slowed since 2019-20. Raty should still feature prominently for Finland at the 2022 world juniors and has plenty of time to rediscover the form that had many believing he should've been a lottery pick.

What they're saying

"I've seen enough over the years to still believe in the player, but it's fair to say I approach him with a large degree of caution," said The Athletic's Corey Pronman in his final draft rankings.

"He has skill in his game. He has quick-twitch hands and is great at handling the puck in small areas. He's a fine, albeit awkward, skater who makes skilled plays on the move but needs to add more pace to his game. His playmaking and shot are both solid quality, but neither are spectacular. He has some physicality to his game and brings energy to shifts."

Avalanche sign Makar to 6-year deal worth $54 million

The Colorado Avalanche have signed star defenseman Cale Makar to a six-year deal, the team announced Saturday.

The contract carries an average annual cap hit of $9 million, according to his agent Brian Bartlett.

Makar was set to become a restricted free agent on Wednesday.

More to come.
