Fantasy: 5 moves you need to make in Week 5

Every week, theScore offers a fantasy hockey column detailing a handful of moves you should make. This edition focuses on Week 5. Roster percentages and position eligibility are courtesy of Yahoo.

Trade Jonathan Huberdeau

Team: Panthers
Position: LW
Rostered: 99%

The basic stats don't look bad for Huberdeau, as he's tallied 15 points in 12 games this season. However, a deeper look into the numbers suggests he's lucky to have that many points. Trade Huberdeau immediately while his value is still high.

The Panthers winger has been one of the most productive fantasy players over the last couple of seasons, recording 170 points in 151 games. But during that span, he averaged 18:49 per game and 2.5 shots per contest. Those marks are down to 16:36 and 1.17 this season, respectively, and his unsustainable 28.6% shooting percentage is more than double the 14% it was the last two years.

Huberdeau is also no longer playing with Aleksander Barkov at five-on-five, and his production has suffered as a result. Over half his points this campaign have come on the power play, which is not sustainable moving forward, and getting his top-line role back also won't be easy with the way Carter Verhaeghe is performing.

Add Jeff Skinner

Team: Sabres
Position: LW
Rostered: 15%

Skinner has been a punchline in Buffalo this season with zero goals and just one assist in 10 games - and he makes $9 million per year.

However, the club has promoted the winger to the top line alongside Jack Eichel and Victor Olofsson. Skinner's career-best 40-goal season in 2018-19 came alongside Eichel, but he hasn't received the opportunity to play with him very often since.

The Sabres are scheduled to have four games this week, too, so even if Skinner doesn't set the world on fire, you're getting volume at the very least.

Add Joe Thornton

Team: Maple Leafs
Position: C/LW
Rostered: 10%

Thornton missed the last 10 games with a rib injury, but he'll return to the Maple Leafs' lineup on Monday against the Ottawa Senators. Thornton's also returning to his role alongside Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner on the team's top line.

The 41-year-old didn't make the most of his opportunity before the injury, registering just a goal and an assist in five games. His underlying numbers were strong, though, as he still leads the Leafs with a career-best 61.4% expected goals.

Thornton does not have long-term value, but the Leafs have four games this week, and three of them are against the lowly Senators.

Add Devan Dubnyk

Team: Sharks
Position: G
Rostered: 14%

If you're experiencing deja vu while reading this, don't be alarmed - I did recommend adding Dubnyk last week as well. But repeating the recommendation feels warranted because he didn't play any contests this past week due to a lower-body injury.

Dubnyk is still listed as day-to-day. If possible, wait until he's cleared before adding him. If he's healthy enough to play by Monday, he could get all three of the Sharks' matchups this week.

Martin Jones has further played himself out of the starter's role, now owning an .867 save percentage and a 3.96 goals-against average in nine games this season. Dubnyk, who's posted a .917 save percentage and a 2.71 goals-against average in six appearances, will get a chance to claim the No. 1 job when he's healthy.

Add Tanner Pearson

Team: Canucks
Position: LW
Rostered: 17%

Vancouver plays four times this week, and only one of its tilts - Monday vs. the Calgary Flames - comes on a busy game night. The Canucks have endured a miserable start to their season, but they appear to be coming around. Vancouver has outshot its opponents 140-95 and outchanced them 119-105 over the last four games - but the club has also been outscored 12-6.

The Canucks are due for some luck to fall their way this week, and Pearson - who ranks fourth on the team with 42 shots - is the best streaming option. The winger plays on the second line with Bo Horvat and Nils Hoglander and sees time on the second power-play unit. The rookie Hoglander (11%) is also worth adding if Pearson has already been scooped up.

Makar day-to-day with upper-body injury, MacKinnon back in lineup

Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar is unavailable for Sunday's clash against the Vegas Golden Knights and is day-to-day with an upper-body injury, Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar confirmed to The Athletic's Peter Baugh.

Sunday's game is Colorado's first since Feb. 2, as the club has dealt with a series of postponements due to COVID-19 protocols.

While Makar's absence is significant, the Avalanche will have No. 1 center Nathan MacKinnon back in the lineup. The 25-year-old was originally considered week-to-week with a lower-body injury but only missed one game before Colorado's schedule came to a halt.

Makar, 22, has been sensational in his sophomore season, racking up 12 points in 11 games while logging over 24 minutes of ice time per contest. The reigning Calder Trophy winner has firmly established himself as a Norris candidate early in the 2020-21 season.

Here is Colorado's projected lineup for Sunday:

The Avalanche are 7-3-1 on the season and sit third in the West Division. They have one game in hand on second-place Vegas and four games in hand on the division-leading St. Louis Blues.

Maple Leafs’ Thornton ready to return after 10-game absence

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joe Thornton is ready to return to the lineup for Monday's game against the Ottawa Senators, he confirmed after Sunday's practice, according to TSN's Kristen Shilton.

"I feel really good. I can't wait to play tomorrow," Thornton said.

Thornton has missed Toronto's last 10 games after suffering a rib injury on Jan. 20 in a contest versus the Edmonton Oilers.

The 41-year-old was back in his spot on the Maple Leafs' top line alongside Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner at practice. Here's how Toronto's forward group lined up:

The Maple Leafs went 8-1-1 with Thornton sidelined and sit atop the North Division with 23 points.

Thornton has notched one goal and one assist through five games this season.

Krueger returns to Sabres’ practice after positive COVID-19 test

Buffalo Sabres head coach Ralph Krueger returned to practice with his club Sunday after testing positive for COVID-19, the team announced.

Krueger tested positive on Feb. 4 as several Sabres players landed on the NHL's COVID protocol list following a weekend series with the New Jersey Devils that reportedly left Buffalo furious.

The Sabres haven't played since Jan. 31 but could return to the ice Monday versus the Devils.

Along with Krueger, star players Taylor Hall and Rasmus Dahlin returned to practice over the weekend. However, several Buffalo skaters - including Dylan Cozens and Rasmus Ristolainen - remain on the COVID list and are unable to participate in team activities.

Here's a look at the Sabres' lineup at practice Sunday:

Buffalo sits last in the East Division with a 4-4-2 record but is only five points outside a playoff position with several postponed games to play.

Canucks owner has ‘full confidence’ in Benning, Green

Vancouver Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini took to Twitter to assure the jobs of general manager Jim Benning and head coach Travis Green are safe.

The Canucks entered Saturday sitting second last in the North Division at 6-11-0. Their minus-15 goal differential is the third worst in the league.

Expectations were high entering the season after Vancouver's budding, young core led the team into the second round of the 2020 playoffs. However, the Canucks appear to have taken a step back after losing Jacob Markstrom, Chris Tanev, and Tyler Toffoli in free agency this past offseason.

It has led many fans to point the finger at Benning, who was unable to retain any of the three key veterans due to cap constraints he created. Loui Eriksson ($6-million AAV), Tyler Myers ($6 million), Brandon Sutter ($4.375 million), Antoine Roussel ($3 million), Jay Beagle ($3 million) were all signed under Benning.

He's overseen two playoff berths since his hiring in 2014. Green, meanwhile, has served as head coach since 2017 and has compiled a 108-114-28 record. He's made the playoffs once.

Aquilini felt the need to "speak up" because he believes the media has created negativity around the team.

Aquilini purchased 50% of the Canucks in 2004 and the remaining 50% two years later.

Lightning’s Cirelli week-to-week with upper-body injury

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Anthony Cirelli is week-to-week due to an upper-body injury, the club announced Saturday.

Cirelli was hurt midway through the third period of a loss to the Florida Panthers on Thursday night. He left the 5-2 defeat at that point and didn't return.

The 23-year-old was tied for fourth on the Lightning with four goals and ranked fourth with 10 points in 12 games prior to Tampa Bay's rematch with Florida on Saturday.

Cirelli is a key member of his team, normally occupying the second-line center role. He finished fourth in Selke Trophy voting last season.

The defending Stanley Cup champions are already without captain and top-line pivot Steven Stamkos, who remains on the NHL's COVID-19 protocol list. Tampa Bay has also played 2021 without star forward Nikita Kucherov, who's not expected to return from his injury during the regular season.
