Canadiens sign Gallagher to 6-year extension with $6.5M AAV

What a difference a day makes.

The Montreal Canadiens inked forward Brendan Gallagher to a six-year contract extension carrying an average annual value of $6.5 million, the club announced Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Gallagher's agent Gerry Johansson said negotiations between his client and the team had broken off.

The two sides ironed things out following a miscommunication, according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun.

Gallagher's new pact includes a modified no-trade clause and a full no-move clause for the entire length of the contract, LeBrun added.

The 28-year-old's current deal, which carries a cap hit of $3.75 million, expires at the end of next season. He would have been eligible for unrestricted free agency following the 2020-21 campaign.

Gallagher tied Tomas Tatar for the team lead with 22 goals in 2019-20 while playing nine fewer games. Gallagher ranked fourth on the club with 43 points in only 59 contests.

He's spent his entire eight-year career with the Canadiens, who drafted him 147th overall in 2010.
