Leafs’ Babcock wants goalie interference inconsistencies ‘fixed’ before playoffs

Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock appears to be fed up with the lack of clarity on what's goalie interference, and what isn't.

During the Leafs' 5-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Monday, the officials ruled there was no goaltender interference on Johan Larsson's goal seen below:

Babcock was not happy with the call, and hopes inconsistencies such as this incident won't decide playoff games this spring.

"No one knows what's going on so we better get it solved," Babcock told TSN's Kristen Shilton postgame. "Let's get it fixed before the playoffs so we all know the rules."

What seems to have irked Babcock the most is that the league explanation stated that no goaltender interference occurred on the play, but apparently the referee told him Frederik Andersen was indeed interfered with, but it occurred outside the crease.

"What I don't like is the report that came out from the league is different than what they told me," he told TSN's Mark Masters. "They told me he was interfered with outside the paint, which is not true. That tonight is goalie interference any way you look at it."

Babcock may have a legitimate gripe. It appears Larsson's skate sweeps through the crease and makes contact with Andersen while he's still on the outer edges of the blue paint.

As expected, Andersen wasn't pleased with the call, either.

"I think if anything (goalie interference) is more unclear," Andersen told Shilton. "Hopefully it's something that can be fixed in the next few weeks. The sooner the better."

Over a month ago, Commissioner Gary Bettman issued a memo to officials asking them to ease off when looking at video for goaltender interference, yet controversies remain.

Flames’ leaky goaltending continues with 4th straight loss

Regardless of how good a team is, losing a starting goalie can be a crippling blow. So, when Calgary Flames' No. 1 netminder Mike Smith went down with injury on Feb. 11, it's safe to say the expectation was for the team to struggle.

And struggle they have.

With unproven NHL goaltenders David Rittich and Jon Gillies as the backup options, a netminding tandem that owns just two combined starts prior to this season, Calgary has seen itself fall out of a playoff spot with losses in eight of its 11 games since Smith went down.

The Flames lost a close one Monday night to the Pittsburgh Penguins, but Gillies allowed four goals and looked completely lost at times, and Rittich hasn't fared much better.

Take a look at both of their numbers since Smith's injury. Forewarning: it's not exactly pretty.

Goalie GP Record SV% GAA
David Rittich 6 1-4-1 .864 4.00
Jon Gillies 7 2-2-1 .901 2.42

It should be noted Gillies has been the better guy in the blue paint, but that's not exactly saying much as his two wins came against the Arizona Coyotes and Colorado Avalanche.

The Flames currently sit three points adrift of the final Western Conference wild-card slot with 15 games remaining, so they are very much still in contention for postseason puck.

However, Smith's timetable for return is still unclear, and he has yet to be activated from injured reserve. Calgary, therefore, will likely have to get the job done by relying on their shaky duo down the stretch.

The Flames are next in action when they visit the red-hot Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday.

Stars’ Bishop leaves game vs. Senators with lower-body injury

Dallas Stars goaltender Ben Bishop suffered a lower-body injury in the first period of Monday's game against the Ottawa Senators and is questionable to return, the team announced.

Bishop appeared to hurt himself when defenseman Dan Hamhuis fell on him.

Bishop stayed in the game after the play, but Kari Lehtonen replaced him to start the second period.

Report: Panthers to fly Stoneman Douglas HS hockey team to nationals

The hockey community is stepping up in support of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School hockey team.

In the wake of a deadly mass shooting that took the lives of 17 staff and students at the school in Parkland, Fla. almost three weeks ago, teams, players, and executives from around the NHL have been doing what they can to turn a tragedy into something positive for a group of high-schoolers who have obviously been going through tough times.

After winning the state championship at the end of February, the Stoneman Douglas hockey team has been in need of a lift to the national championship in Minnesota. Enter the Florida Panthers. Team management is reportedly stepping up to pay for the team's trip at the end of March, according to Matthew DeFranks of the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

The Panthers' offer is the latest gesture on behalf of the NHL in support of the team.

First, it was Philadelphia Flyers defenseman and Stoneman Douglas alum Shayne Gostisbehere meeting with the team following Sunday's game against the Panthers:

The team was then invited to practice at BB&T arena on Monday, which was followed by a surprise visit from the Stanley Cup:

These acts of kindness cannot take back the tragic events that unfolded, but at the very least, it's a temporary relief for a group of hockey-loving teenagers.

The national championship tournament is set for March 22-26.

McLellan tells McDavid hecklers to ‘look in the mirror’

Todd McLellan is sticking up for Connor McDavid and questioning the actions of some unruly individuals who heckled the Edmonton Oilers captain.

Here's how the head coach responded when asked about a viral video originally posted to Reddit and later shared by TSN's BarDown, which showed several fans giving McDavid a hard time outside a restaurant while he was with his family.

"I haven't seen it, but he would be the last one I would heckle if I (were) a fan," McLellan told reporters Monday, via CTV Edmonton's Adam Cook. "He gives the community everything he has, and I'm not just talking about on-ice (contributions)."

McLellan cited McDavid's frequent charity work and said the hecklers should consider how their own actions make them look.

"I often sit in the lunchroom and I ask him, 'What are you guys doing today?', and about every second day, Connor says, 'I'm going to a hospital, I've got to go see these kids, I'm going to go do that, so the individuals that choose to heckle him (need to) look in the mirror."

McDavid declined to comment on the matter Monday.

"Honestly, it's so not a big deal, I'm not even going to say anything on it," the Oilers superstar told reporters, via TSN. "This weekend I had my parents in town, so it was nice to have them around and show them around Edmonton. They've been here a few times now, but I haven't seen them in a while ... so I definitely was missing them and (was) happy to have them in town for a bit."

Leafs’ Martin returns to lineup after slew of healthy scratches

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matt Martin will return to the lineup Monday versus the Buffalo Sabres after sitting the previous 18 games as a healthy scratch.

Martin's last appearance came Jan. 22, when the Maple Leafs fell 4-2 to the Colorado Avalanche.

While he has stayed positive from the sidelines, he's happy to get another shot against the Sabres.

"When it first starts, you think it's just going to be a couple (games). I think we hit a month," Martin told TSN's Kristen Shilton. "It definitely dragged on for a while. Some days are harder than others."

In 47 games this season, the winger has picked up 11 points and 45 penalty minutes.

He's signed through the 2019-20 campaign at a $2.5-million cap hit.

Oilers sign Dylan Larkin’s brother, Colin, to 1-year deal

The Edmonton Oilers signed college free-agent forward Colin Larkin to a one-year, entry-level contract Monday.

The older brother of Detroit Red Wings center Dylan Larkin just wrapped up his senior season as a 24-year-old in Division III for the UMass-Boston Beacons.

He served as team captain for the 2017-18 season.

Rask dealing with minor injury, not expected to play Tuesday

The Boston Bruins will likely be without their talented starting goaltender for yet another game.

Tuukka Rask is nursing a minor injury and it "doesn't look like he'll be able" to play Tuesday against the Detroit Red Wings, Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy told reporters Monday.

The coach said it appears unlikely Rask will be ready in time for the contest because he hasn't skated for three days now, and the netminder "probably wants to get in a little work before he goes back in" the crease.

Rask was a late scratch Saturday against the Montreal Canadiens with what Cassidy deemed a "very minor injury" at the time, according to WEEI's Ty Anderson.

The 30-year-old has a .919 save percentage and a record of 26-11-4 in 42 games this season, but has struggled lately, going 4-3-0 with an .888 save percentage in his last seven contests.

After Tuesday night's home date with the Red Wings, the Bruins host the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday and then take on the Chicago Blackhawks in Boston on Saturday, in the first game of a weekend home-and-home back-to-back.

MacKinnon, Laine, Barkov named NHL’s 3 stars of the week

Nathan MacKinnon doesn't seem to be showing any rust from a recent injury spell.

The Colorado Avalanche forward has tallied 11 points in his past four games, including a five-point outing against the Minnesota Wild. On Monday, he was recognized as the NHL's first star of the week.

Winnipeg Jets superstar Patrik Laine is the NHL's second star of the week after he notched seven points in three games, including back-to-back multi-goal efforts over the Detroit Red Wings and Carolina Hurricanes.

Meanwhile, the Florida Panthers, who have made a late surge toward a playoff position, can credit NHL's third star of the week Aleksander Barkov for their recent performance. The forward has collected five goals and an assist in his last four appearances. Barkov leads the Panthers in scoring with 64 points in 62 games.
