Andersson entered the draft as the third-ranked European prospect, according to NHL Central Scouting, having remained steady in the same position after the midterm rankings.

"He is a really skilled, two-way forward with great moves with the puck," NHL director of European scouting Goran Stubb said. "He shows very good attitude, works hard both ways, has smooth hands, and is very effective in the offensive zone as he can both shoot and create scoring chances for his linemates."

The 18-year-old represented Sweden at the World Junior Hockey Championship this year where he posted three goals in seven games.

Andersson has all the tools to be an effective offensive player. He possesses vision, speed, and a great release, and isn't afraid to go to the net to score a dirty goal.

Glass finished sixth in the final rankings among North American skaters, two slots higher than his midterm showing, according to NHL Central Scouting. He is a right-shot center who can line up at all three forward positions, but is at his best as the pivot given his up-tempo style.

"He has good hands and playmaking ability with a style of play that has been compared to Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron," writes Mike G. Morreale of NHL.com.

Pettersson displays good hockey sense and solid offensive instincts, attributes that have earned his playing style comparisons to fellow Swede Nicklas Backstrom, according to NHL.com. He finished second among European skaters ranked by NHL Central Scouting.

"(Pettersson) has good vision and hands and is considered more of a playmaker," writes Mike G. Morreale of NHL.com. "He can play wing or center, and can effectively run a power play."

Stars hold on to 3rd pick, draft defenseman Miro Heiskanen

The Dallas Stars selected defenseman Miro Heiskanen with the third overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft on Friday.

It's always tough to evaluate a 17-year-old kid who played professionally with men. However, it's clear that Heiskanen is a smooth skater, positionally sound, and is very poised with the puck on his stick. He isn't flashy by any stretch. He doesn't wow offensively, though there is some potential based on his skating and creativity with the puck. He is surprisingly physical for a defenseman of his size, though it remains to be seen if that will carry over at the next level.

n elite two-way defenceman in the making, Miro Heiskanen has a toolbox bursting at the seams. Very smooth skater whose general agility and athleticism is excellent and on display every shift. A confident puck-mover with no issues running a play himself and starting a transition up-ice. Solid creativity and impressive puck skills. Always makes the high percentage play and doesn't put teammates in dangerous or vulnerable positions. Willingness to play a physical game is not an issue, as he is often seen throwing the body. Defensively very diligent and proactive, keeping the opposition to the outside and cutting off open and common lanes. - Elite Prospects.

Flyers take Nolan Patrick 2nd overall

The Philadelphia Flyers selected Nolan Patrick with the second overall pick in the NHL draft on Friday night.

Patrick battled through a pair of injuries this season, missing 35 games in the regular season and all four of the Wheat Kings' playoff games, but he was the consensus top prospect coming into this draft.

He seemed to put any lingering health concerns to rest at the scouting combine, getting medically cleared for all tests, then holding his own despite being bested by the other highly touted prospect, Nico Hischier, in many of the events.

The 18-year-old had a productive season considering its abbreviated nature, and that came after a 41-goal, 102-point campaign in 2015-16.

Patrick finished as the top-ranked North American skater this spring, and while he's not considered to be a generational talent like Auston Matthews or Connor McDavid, scouts still expect big things from him.

"He has more than proven over the last three years that he is the real deal and he will be an impact NHL player," Central Scouting director Dan Marr told NHL.com in April.

He has a pro hockey pedigree, too, as the son of former NHL forward Steve Patrick and the nephew of former defenseman and coach James Patrick.

"He's got a good understanding of the game, has been taught good fundamentals from a young age," NHL Central Scouting's Matt Ryan told NHL.com. "There are a lot of guys who don't seem to have that understanding of the effort it takes to play at a high level with and without the puck. Nolan Patrick does."

Devils draft Nico Hischier 1st overall

The New Jersey Devils selected forward Nico Hischier with the first overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft on Friday.

Nico Hischier

Height: 6-foot-0
Weight: 174 lbs
Age: 18
Club: Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL)
Nationality: Switzerland

(Even-strength stats courtesy: prospect-stats.com)

Hischier arguably made more strides than any draft-eligible player this season. He failed to crack the top 15 of the preseason draft rankings of TSN's Bob McKenzie, but by midseason Hischier was ranked as the No. 2 North American skater by NHL Central Scouting.

He still has potential to add bulk to his 6-foot frame. If he can do so by training camp, he could be NHL-ready. Otherwise, another year of junior might serve him best.

"A smooth-skating, playmaking center…good skating agility and top speed, but is more quick than fast…is able to make quick turns and displays good lateral movement…not big or strong, but still shows willingness to take hits and battle for space…goes into board battles and uses his body to fight for pucks…excellent playmaking instincts, vision and passing skills…puts puck where his linemates can best utilize the chance…an incredible stickhandler who thrives in possession and can make defenders look foolish" - Future Considerations.

Report: Senators still trying to deal Phaneuf

While the expansion draft has passed, that doesn't mean Ottawa Senators defenseman Dion Phaneuf is staying put.

The Senators are still trying to move Phaneuf, according to TSN's Darren Dreger, and one source told the insider there is "some interest" from teams that Phaneuf would accept a trade to.

The 32-year-old can submit a list of 12 teams that he can be traded to, according to Cap Friendly.

Phaneuf was the talk of the Senators last week after he refused to waive his no-trade clause, which would have allowed the team to protect Marc Methot instead. Methot was ultimately selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the expansion draft.

Tortorella won’t change Panarin’s game, plans to play him with Wennberg

If it ain't broke don't fix it. That's the approach Columbus Blue Jackets head coach John Tortorella plans to take with his club's newest acquisition, Artemi Panarin.

The former Chicago Blackhawks forward tallied 30 and 31 goals in his first two seasons in the league, and Tortorella said he doesn't plan to tinker with what has made him such a dynamic player in his short time, according to NHL.com's Dan Rosen.

The coach also noted he plans to play him alongside Alexander Wennberg.

With Panarin being among the game's better trigger men and Wennberg having led the Blue Jackets with 46 assists, the duo could be a perfect match.

Capitals sign Oshie to 8-year extension

The Washington Capitals have re-signed right winger T.J. Oshie to an eight-year, $46-million contract extension, the team announced Friday.

Oshie is coming off an impressive season in which he registered a career-high 33 goals and finished with his second-highest point total at 56.

General manager Brian MacLellan completed Oshie's deal just hours ahead of the entry draft and in the process removed one of the biggest free-agent names from the market.

"T.J. is an invaluable member of our team and we felt it was imperative for us to re-sign him in a competitive free-agent market," said MacLellan. "T.J. is a highly competitive player with a tremendous skill set; he epitomizes the kind of player our team must have in order for us to continue to put ourselves in a position to compete in this League."

Oshie was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, but with his new deal, he becomes a cornerstone of the Capitals' franchise for the foreseeable future.
